WASHINGTON—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, today released the following statement after Saule Omarova, President Joe Biden’s nominee to be Comptroller of the Currency, withdrew from consideration:
“After witnessing Dr. Omarova’s shockingly out-of-touch perspective at her confirmation hearing, which led to bipartisan opposition to her nomination, I am pleased that she has recognized that her policy priorities are simply too extreme for the American people. When I questioned her if high gas prices were bad for America, she called it a ‘tricky question.’ Having Dr. Omarova as the top bank regulator would have posed significant risk to our financial markets—the envy of the world—and it is incumbent upon President Biden to recognize this when selecting his next nominee.”
